Robert Fulton Purcell was born in Jackson, Michigan on January 31, 1841.
After the death of his first wife and son, he married Cora Frances Gray on May 22, 1879 in Barrington; they raised 4 daughters and a son.
Purcell was a Private in the Civil War in the 89th Illinois Infantry. His service began when he enlisted in Chicago on August 6, 1862, and he mustered out in Nashville, Tennessee on June 10, 1865. He was a prisoner of war in Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia.
He was a Railway Engineer following the war, and was still working in 1910.
Private Purcell died on December 27, 1926 in Barrington, Illinois and rests at Evergreen Cemetery with his wife and WWI Veteran son.
