Job Title: Assistant Librarian
Department: Adult Services

JOB PURPOSE:
The Adult Services Department is responsible for creating a positive experience for adults and teens who use the Barrington Area Library through excellent customer service, strong knowledge of collections, and assistance with technology. The Adult Services Assistant Librarian delivers exceptional customer service to library visitors at remote and on-site service points through reference, reader’s advisory and basic technology assistance.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Deliver exceptional customer service to library visitors at on-site service points through reference, reader’s advisory, and basic technology assistance.
  2. Support departmental activities through remote services as needed.
  3. Provide basic support with the Library’s downloadable/streaming services.
  4. Actively promote library services, material circulation, and programs to customers.
  5. Maintain knowledge of current department-related trends through continual learning.
  6. Ensure all policies of the Barrington Area Library are followed; appropriately interpret procedures and policies to resolve problems that are complex in nature within the scope of the position.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
• Personal or work experience with a variety of adult literature.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
• Demonstrated organizational skills.
• Experience with successful customer interactions in a group and/or individual setting.
• Familiarity with current technology.
• Ability to work rotating and various work shifts including evenings and weekends
• Ability to travel locally.

Education and/or Other Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree.

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to see, walk, talk, and hear.
• Ability to reach shelves of various heights.
• Physical dexterity for frequent computer use.
• Visual acuity to read standard office documents and read 10-point font print.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
