Job Title: Assistant Librarian
Department: Youth Services

JOB PURPOSE: The Youth Services department is responsible for selecting and recommending materials for children from birth-eighth grade and their caregivers, as well as shaping services, experiences, and spaces that inspire curiosity and create young readers. The Youth Services Assistant Librarian provides reference and reader’s advisory to customers, assists professional staff with programs, and performs a variety of activities essential to the daily operation of the department.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Deliver exceptional customer service at in-person and virtual service points through reference, reader’s advisory, and basic technology assistance to children from birth-eighth grade and their caregivers.
  2. Actively promote Library services, materials, and programs to customers.
  3. Demonstrate good stewardship of physical and virtual spaces by preparing and merchandising department displays, continually maintaining interactive areas, and producing and updating content for the Library’s web presence, as assigned.
  4. Under the direction of the Department Head, assist with maintaining the circulating children’s and teen’s collections in collaboration with Youth Services professional staff.
  5. Support Youth Services programming staff in preparing and presenting programs for children and their caregivers, including story times, craft programs, technology classes, and other assigned activities.
  6. Ensure all policies and procedures of the Barrington Area Library are followed; appropriately interpret procedures and policies to resolve problems that are complex in nature within the scope of the position.
  7. Serve on committees and attend Library meetings as requested.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience working with children, preferably in a service-related industry.
  • Ability to use computers and relevant software and other technology.
  • Flexibility to be able to work rotating and various work shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to travel locally, as needed.

After a training period, an employee in this position will be expected to:

  • Provide exceptional service to Library customers.
  • Understand the Library’s policies and procedures and use them effectively.
  • Successfully assist the facilitation of projects and programs.
  • Collaborate productively with internal and external customers.
  • Successfully utilize the Library’s tools and technology and perform basic troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrate the flexibility to work various shifts in accordance with the needs of the department.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to see, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear frequently.
  • Ability to perform some programing duties outdoors in suitable weather conditions.
  • Physical dexterity to reach shelves of various heights, and occasionally lift, pull, push or transport equipment and furnishings not to exceed 20 lbs.
  • Physical dexterity for frequent computer use.
  • Visual acuity to read standard office documents and 10 point font.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in English.
