Job Title: Librarian
Department: Adult Services

JOB PURPOSE: The Adult Services department is responsible for creating a positive experience for adults and teens who use the Barrington Area Library through excellent customer service, strong knowledge of collections, and assistance with technology. In support of department goals, the Adult Services Librarian initiates, plans, and presents diverse and innovative programs, as well as providing outreach services to community members, organizations and businesses. The Adult Services Librarian selects, maintains, and promotes collections through displays, booklists, and reader’s advisory. This position functions with a high level of autonomy, professionalism, and independent judgment.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Deliver exceptional customer service at in-person and virtual service points through expert-level reference, reader’s advisory, and basic technology assistance for customers who range from teen to adult.
  2. As directed by the Department Head, coordinate and lead the facilitation of and communication around assigned services, projects, or programs, including preparing other department staff to assist.
  3. Select and maintain circulating adult collections as assigned and in accordance with the Library’s Resource Selection Policy.
  4. Initiate, plan, and present diverse and creative programs in support of department goals and community needs, including researching and arranging for external vendors to present at these programs.
  5. Plan, promote, and provide outreach services for community members, organizations, and businesses.
  6. Demonstrate good stewardship of physical and virtual spaces by preparing and merchandising department displays, and producing and updating content for the Library’s web presence, as assigned.
  7. Actively promote Library services, materials, and programs to customers.
  8. Ensure all policies and procedures of the Barrington Area Library are followed; interpret procedures and policies appropriately to resolve problems that are complex in nature, within the scope of the position.
  9. Serve on planning committees and attend Library meetings as requested.
  10. Serve as person-in-charge (PIC) as assigned.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Completion of an ALA-accredited MLS degree.
  • Experience delivering library programs to adults and teens.
  • Basic knowledge of adult and teen collections.
  • Ability to use computers and relevant software and other technology.
  • Flexibility to work rotating and various work shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to travel locally, as needed.

After a training period, an employee in this position will be expected to:

  • Understand the Library’s policies and procedures and use them effectively.
  • Successfully design, lead, and evaluate programs and services that meet BALibrary standards and goals.
  • Collaborate productively with internal and external customers.
  • Successfully utilize the Library’s tools and technology and perform basic troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrate the flexibility to work various shifts in accordance with the needs of the department.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to see, stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear frequently.
  • Physical dexterity to reach shelves of various heights, push full carts (average 50 pounds or less), and lift heavy containers (average 10 pounds or less) occasionally during a work shift.
  • Physical dexterity to perform frequent data entry on a computer, laptop, iPad, or other electronic device.
  • Visual acuity to read standard office documents and 10 point font.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in English.
