Margaret and Hal have been searching for their dream home for what feels like ages when they stumble upon a shockingly affordable old Victorian that feels like it’s been made for them. They buy the house, and it doesn’t take long to realize why they got such a great deal-it’s way, way haunted. Each September, the walls bleed, ghosts appear, and unspeakable sounds come from the basement. Ever the stubborn pragmatist, Margaret refuses to sell, and after four years, Hal abruptly leaves. After not reaching her father for weeks, their daughter Katherine arrives to find him as September begins, and things go just about how you’d think. This is a page turner with excellent gothic vibes perfect for the season, and a sense of humor that keeps the story from getting too scary.
