Job Title: Senior Custodian
Department: Building Services-Operations
Reports To: Building Services Manager

Under the direction of the Building Services Manager, support the overall mission of the library by ensuring the library building is in operating order and the needs of library customers and personnel are met.

Essential Job Duties
1. Regularly monitor and maintain the library’s building structure, systems, and grounds, making recommendations for improvements and services to the Building Services Manager.
2. Perform custodial and janitorial tasks throughout the building and on the library grounds.
3. Perform meeting room set up, take down, and cleaning of the furniture and rooms.
4. Promptly respond to urgent cleaning tasks and ticket requests.
5. Deliver materials and packages to appropriate staff and departments.
6. Operate building machinery, systems, and equipment utilizing safety precautions.
7. Maintain inventory of building supplies and prepare purchase requests as needed.
8. Assemble, repair, move, or install furniture and equipment as required.
9. Assist Building Services Manager with internal communications as directed.
10. Assist with training new team members as assigned.
11. Serve as Building Services team lead as required including on-call responsibilities.
12. Carry out opening and closing procedures of the building as required.
13. Respond to internal and external customer communications using appropriate business etiquette and modeling excellent customer service.
14. Perform snow removal, grounds cleaning, and deliveries in all weather conditions as needed.
15. Lead and participate in periodically scheduled cleaning and maintenance projects, overseeing completed work.
16. Provide assistance during inspections and emergency situations as needed.
17. Ensure all policies of the Barrington Area Library are followed.
18. Serve on planning committees and outreach activities as requested.
19. Attend library meetings as requested by management.
20. Perform other duties as assigned.

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:
1. General understanding of service standards and procedures within a public building.
2. Professional written and verbal communication skills.
3. Ability to learn standard building systems, software, equipment, and tools.
4. Ability to write and answer email, create documents, and navigate Internet websites.

To perform the job successfully, after initial introductory period, an individual must demonstrate the following competencies:

2. Working knowledge of various library communications systems.

4. Ability to respond appropriately to various work requests.
5. Ability to maintain a safe environment for public and staff.
6. Flexibility and adaptability with respect to work schedules, workflows and job tasks as requested.
7. Adherence to safety procedures and respond to building emergencies appropriately.
8. Maintenance of a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.

Education and/or Other Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• A combination of work or education in a skilled trade, facility systems operation, or the use of building tools and equipment is preferred.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and appropriate auto insurance.
• Ability to travel locally on behalf of the library.

Physical Requirements
• Able to regularly see, stand, walk, hear, and communicate for long periods.
• Able to, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch as needed to successfully perform all duties.
• Able to reach, push, lift, and carry heavy containers (up to 75 pounds) occasionally during a work shift.
• Able to move furniture, change light bulbs, utilize manual tools, power tools, and custodial equipment, climb ladders and stairs, carry trash, and shovel snow in various weather conditions.
• Able to tolerate exposure to nontoxic fumes, airborne particles, outdoor allergens, and cleaning chemicals.
• Able to tolerate exposure to differing temperatures internally and externally.
• Able to read, write, and communicate fluently in English.
• Able to perform work on a computer, laptop, iPad, or other electronic device, with visual acuity to read materials in 8 point font.
